Message from the COO

  • Executive Officer, COO, Transportation Machinery Division
  • Kaoru Iwasa

Adopting the Ship Unit from fiscal year 2010 to the Transportation Machinery Division, we are developing business across a broad field of transportation machinery (aircraft & defense systems, automobiles, construction machinery, agro machinery, and ships). Under the slump of automotive, construction, and agro machinery market, we have focused on reinforcement of after-sales business, where we can expect constant revenue even during the economic downturn.
In fiscal year 2010 during which we expect recovery of the market, we intend to make new investments in areas such as leasing and retail finance, in addition to the improvement of profit margins in the existing business, to strengthen our functions and expand our business foundation

Sources of Strength
• Expanding merchandise from Europe and North America through investment and trade in the field of aircraft & defense system business

Investment in engine development program of Rolls-Royce (England) for large aircraft, passenger aircraft of Embraer (Brazil), business jet of Gulfstream (USA), large helicopters of AgustaWestland (England/Italy), and electronic devices of Thales (France) have been contributing to the profit of the division.

• Wide variety of functions, such as trade and retail finance, in the automotive, construction & agro machinery fields
We operate a wide variety of businesses, both functionally and regionally. These businesses include the trading, wholesale, and retail finance of construction & agro machinery in emerging countries in the Middle East, Latin America, etc., along with car dealer franchise in the United States, Great Britain, and Australia.

• Organizing function in the ship business
We are developing ship business on a global scale, organically consolidating the needs of ship-operators, ship-owners, dockyards, and financial institutions with the organizing function of a general trading firm through ship business value chain; chartering brokerage, buying and selling of secondhand ships and ship materials/ equipments, ship-owner business.
