Marubeni established educational foundations in Cambodia and Lao P.D.R. in 2007, as part of the 150th anniversary of founding. This article reports scholarship award ceremonies held in both countries.

Marubeni is moving ahead with efforts to further expand its scholarship foundation systems in ASEAN. As part of this project, the Marubeni Cambodia Educational Foundation has been established for students at the Royal University of Phnom Penh that are academically gifted but come from poor economic backgrounds.
The first scholarship awards ceremony for this foundation was held at the University at the beginning of the new semester on October 15, 2008. Those in attendance included Rector Lav Chhiv Eav and other executives of the University, Marubeni Phnom Penh Liaison Office General Manager, Mr. Hirata, and the Scholarship Foundation Director, Ms. Te Duong Somalin. During the ceremony scholarships were presented to each of the 12 scholarship students.
Testimonial received from the Royal University of Phnom Penh
The second scholarship awards ceremony for this foundation was conducted on November 24, 2009. Marubeni Phnom Penh Liaison Office General Manager Mr. Hirata visited the University and awarded scholarships to 24 students. In addition to the 12 students (juniors) that will continue to receive their current scholarship, 12 new students (sophomores) were also presented with scholarships. Rector Lav Chhiv Eav delivered a testimonial in which he thanked Mr. Hirata for Marubeni’s contribution.
Looking ahead to the future, Marubeni will continue to foster an active exchange with these students and look to further expand the scope of the foundation’s activities.

Presentation at the combined (middle/high) boarding school for ethnic minorities in Savannakhet City
To commemorate the 150th anniversary of Marubeni’s founding, the Marubeni Educational Foundation in Lao P.D.R. was approved by the Laotian government and established in 2007, with Marubeni contributing 200,000 dollars (about 1.9 billion kips) in capital in December of the same year. At the first presentation in September, 2008, about 2 million yen worth of school supplies, such as textbooks, were given to the 555 students of the two boarding schools for ethnic minorities in Savannakhet Province.
The establishment of this foundation was approved in 2007. The second award ceremony was held on September 29, 2009 at the Ministry of Education building, with those in attendance including Lytou Bouapao, the Deputy Director General of Department of Planning and Co-operation, Ministry of Education, the ASEAN Regional CEO for Marubeni, Mr. Shikama, committee members of the Foundation, and many collaborators from the Ministry of Education.
At the boarding elementary school for ethnic minorities in Sepone District
Prior to the ceremony, the national staff from the Marubeni Vientiane Liaison Office purchased by bid 250 million kips’ worth of school supplies, including textbooks with the Marubeni logo, stationery (rulers, compasses, protractors, etc.), school uniforms, and dormitory equipment. These materials were packed for each student and individually distributed to each of the 356 students at the boarding elementary schools for ethnic minorities in the Sepone and Phine Districts of Savannakhet Province, as well as the 348 students of the combined (middle/high) boarding school for ethnic minorities in Savannakhet City, which also received materials at the first presentation.
